What is an Extended Service?

Extended Schools provide a range of services and activities beyond the school day, to help meet the needs of children, their families and the wider community. Extended Services can include Childcare, Family Learning Opportunities, Adult Education, Parental Support and Out of School Programmes.

Many schools within the family are already providing these extended services and have been doing so for some time.  By consulting with parents and pupils and involving them in the planning of services, our schools will be able to develop the package of services which best meets the needs of registered children, families and community

The Department of Education and Skills (DfES) (2005) claims that by 2010 all children will have access to a variety of activities beyond the school day. The Extended Service aims to improve the access to a range of services to support children and their families by offering a varied menu, which meets the aims of Every Child Matters and ensures that every child registered within the family of schools, parents/carers and people of the local community have access to activities, learning and support.

Schools are seen as a great centrefold to provide opportunity as they are at the heart of the community. With the facilities within school and the cohesion with local agencies, service providers, community organisations and parents/carers these opportunities can be provided.
